Description

Set during the late 19th century, this science fiction adventure follows a mysterious creature causing alarm among maritime nations. An American expedition, led by Professor Pierre Aronnax, is dispatched to investigate reports of the sea monster. After an attack on their vessel, the crew discovers the creature to be a highly advanced submarine named the Nautilus, commanded by the elusive Captain Nemo. The narrative chronicles their extensive underwater voyage across various oceans, revealing natural wonders and perils beneath the surface.

Published in serial form between 1869 and 1870, the novel reflects Verne’s interest in technological innovation and exploration. It combines elements of scientific speculation with adventure storytelling, set against the backdrop of the world's oceans. The work exemplifies the genre of early science fiction and exemplifies Victorian-era preoccupations with discovery and the potential of human ingenuity.

Verne's Title The French title of this novel is Vingt mille lieues sous les mers . This is accurately translated as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the SEAS—rather than the SEA, as with many English editions. Verne’s novel features a tour of the major oceans, and the term Leagues in its title is used as a measure not of depth but distance. Ed.
