Willie and Lucy at the sea-side: For very little children

Willie and Lucy at the sea-side by Agnes Giberne is a didactic children’s story written in the Victorian era. It follows two young siblings on a seaside holiday, weaving gentle adventures with Christian moral lessons about obedience, kindness, courage, and trust in God.

Willie and Lucy travel by train with their parents and nurse, meet the sea for the first time, and play on the sands with new wooden spades. Willie disobeys nurse by climbing onto a sand mound and tumbles into the water, leading to a sober talk with his mother about obedience and following Jesus. The days bring small adventures: donkey rides, rock-pool discoveries of crabs, starfish, prawns, and a closed sea-anemone; a rainy spell that teaches gratitude for rain and care for the poor; and rough weather that shows the sea’s power under God’s control. At last, in calm weather, the family enjoys a gentle row, learning to sit steady and safe in the boat. The holiday ends with happy memories and a closing appeal to children to seek Christ early and live with humble, loving hearts.
