Description

"Colonial Records of Virginia" compiles documents related to the legislative history of the Virginia colony from its earliest periods. Covering events starting with the first General Assembly in 1619, the work details proceedings, legal decisions, and governmental developments during the colony's formative years. It provides an account of the socio-political circumstances that shaped early colonial governance, including the challenges faced by settlers and authorities alike. The compilation includes corrections of early printing errors and notes to clarify the historical record, reflecting its late 19th-century origin as a reference resource for American colonial history. As a collection of official records, it serves as a primary source for understanding the evolution of colonial law and political structures in Virginia before American independence.

The work is part of a broader effort to document American colonial history, focusing on legislative activities and governance in early Virginia, with context provided by accompanying notes and corrections to ensure accuracy of the historical record.

From the opening pages

Obvious mis-spellings and printing errors have been corrected. Variant spellings of the same word have been retained. With the exception of Note 263, which was retained to facilitate the numbering of footnotes, corrections indicated on the "Errata" page have been made. Notes 50 and 287, and pages iii and iv mentioned in "Errata," are notes 59 and 297, and pages 67 and 68 respectively herein. Footnotes, which are numerous, are placed immediately following the section of the text in which they appear. The word, "negors", is not believed to be a typographical error. A missing, censored, or omitted word on page 17 has been shown by ——. "See note p. 37" in Footnote 1 and "see note pp. 48, 49" in Footnote II have been changed to "See note Q" and "see note CC" respectively to conform to the footnote numbering in this document.
