Description

Set in the early 20th century, Thomas Washington Talley's "Negro Folk Rhymes: Wise and Otherwise" aims to document and preserve the oral traditions of African American communities. The work is an anthology that compiles a variety of folk rhymes and songs, reflecting the cultural expressions arising from the historical context of slavery and its aftermath. The collection includes themes related to love, humour, daily life, and resilience, highlighting the creative ways in which these communities expressed their experiences. The introductory sections discuss the origins and cultural significance of the folk traditions, emphasising their importance as part of African American heritage. The book serves as a record of the oral culture that played a vital role in community cohesion and cultural identity during a period of social upheaval.

The collection presents the rhymes and songs in their original form, with some editorial corrections for spelling and punctuation, to maintain authenticity. It provides insights into folk practices and linguistic features characteristic of the period and community, offering a valuable resource for understanding African American cultural history.

The spectacle, therefore, of a homogeneous throng of partly civilized people dancing to the music of crude instruments and evolving out of dance-rhythm a lyrical or narrative utterance in poetic form is sufficiently rare in the nineteenth century to challenge immediate attention. In Negro Folk Rhymes is to be found no inconsiderable part of the musical and poetic life-records of a people; the compiler presents an arresting volume which, in addition to being a pioneer and practically unique in its field, is as nearly exhaustive as a sympathetic understanding of the Negro mind, careful research, and labor of love can make it.
