Description

This work is a historical novel in prose that recounts the tumultuous period at the end of the Han dynasty and the rise of the Three Kingdoms in China. The narrative combines factual events recorded in historical texts with fictionalised elements, focusing on the power struggles among warlords and military strategists. It presents a detailed portrayal of political intrigue, battles, and alliances, drawing on the 14th-century attribution to Luo Guanzhong and based largely on the 3rd-century Records of the Three Kingdoms by Chen Shou. The text is organised into episodes that reflect key moments from 184 CE, following the Yellow Turban Rebellion, through to the reunification under the Jin dynasty in 280 CE.

The novel is a foundational work of Chinese historical fiction, blending history with heroic narrative. It is assembled as a long prose narrative divided into volumes, with this being the first of two parts. The story emphasises themes of loyalty, strategy, and conquest, set against a backdrop of political chaos and warfare.
