Description
The Dust Flower is a novel written in the early 20th century that examines the complex relationships and social tensions of its characters. Presented as a narrative of personal and emotional conflict, the story focuses on Rashleigh Allerton, a man conflicted by issues of identity and vice, and his fiancée, Barbara Walbrook, as they confront their emotional struggles and societal expectations. The novel explores themes of love, class division, and self-awareness within a period marked by social change, contrasting different social classes and their influence on individual destinies.
The narrative begins with a confrontational scene between Rashleigh and Barbara, highlighting their misunderstandings and emotional turmoil. The novel offers a detailed portrayal of character relationships set against a backdrop of societal pressures typical of the early 20th century British context. Its tone and subject matter reflect the period's interest in personal morality, social class, and psychological conflict.

From the opening pages
Archaic and variable spelling has been preserved as printed in the original book except as indicated in the text by a dashed line under the change. Hover the mouse over the word and the original text will appear . A list of these changes can be found here. Missing/extra quote marks were silently corrected, however, punctuation has not been changed to comply with modern standards. Inconsistency in hyphenation and accented words has also been retained. Two deviations in paragraph-ending punctuation in the original book should be noted: on Page 14, the paragraph beginning, “Within, a toy entry led....” and on Page 42, “There was that about him....” Both paragraphs end with a comma and have been retained, although throughout the book a colon was used to end these types of paragraphs in which dialogue immediately followed. Illustrations have been moved where necessary so that they are not in the middle of a paragraph.
