Description
Written around 370 BC, this historical account by Xenophon narrates the events following the failed expedition of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger in 401 BC. The text covers the military retreat of ten thousand Greek soldiers after the death of Cyrus in battle and the treacherous loss of their commanders. Led by Xenophon, the troops undertake a perilous march through hostile territory, including deserts and mountains, as they attempt to reach safety near the Black Sea. The narrative provides detailed descriptions of the landscape, military tactics, and challenges faced during their survival amidst adversities and enemy attacks.
The work is divided into four books, forming part of Xenophon’s larger Anabasis. It belongs to the genre of ancient military history and offers insight into the tactics, logistics, and morale of Greek mercenaries operating in Persia. The account is of interest for understanding Greek military practices, leadership, and the historical context of early 4th-century BC Persia and Greece.

The elder then happened to be present; Cyrus he sent for from the province of which he had made him satrap. He had also appointed him commander of all the forces that muster in the plain of Castolus. [4] Cyrus accordingly went up, taking with him Tissaphernes as a friend, and having also with him three hundred heavy-armed Greeks, [5] and Xenias of Parrhasia, [6] their captain. 3. But when Darius was dead, and Artaxerxes was placed upon the throne, Tissaphernes brought an accusation against Cyrus before his brother, saying that he was plotting against him.
