Description

This historical account details the suffering and resilience of the Huguenots, a Protestant group in France, following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. It examines the persecution they faced under Louis XIV, including measures that deprived them of religious and civil rights, and discusses the social and political consequences of their oppression. The narrative covers key figures, such as Claude Brousson, and significant events, including uprisings like the Camisard insurrection and the hardships endured by Huguenots, such as imprisonment in galleys. The work situates these events within the broader context of religious conflict in early modern France, highlighting the impact of intolerance and the various forms of resistance by the Protestant community during this period.

The book was written in the early 20th century by Samuel Smiles, focusing on the sociopolitical and religious upheavals experienced by the Huguenots in France during and after their persecution. It provides a detailed chronological account based on historical events and figures, emphasizing the consequences of religious intolerance in European history. The work is a scholarly examination of a pivotal period in French religious history, reflecting broader themes of persecution and resilience.

In preparing this edition for the press, I have ventured to add three short memoirs of distinguished Huguenot Refugees and their descendants. Though the greatest number of Huguenots banished from France at the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes were merchants and manufacturers, who transferred their skill and arts to England, which was not then a manufacturing country; a large number of nobles and gentry emigrated to this and other countries, leaving their possessions to be confiscated by the French king. The greater number of the nobles entered the armies of the countries in which they took refuge. In Holland, they joined the army of the Prince of Orange, afterwards William III., King of England. After driving the armies of Louis XIV. out of Ireland, they met the French at Ramilies, Blenheim, and Malplacquet, and other battles in the Low Countries.
