Description
This work is a largely autobiographical novel written in the form of a reflective and philosophical narrative. Published in 1898, it recounts the experiences of Barty Josselin, a young man from a British background who reflects on his school days in Paris, his spiritual awakening, and subsequent personal development. The novel details his struggles after losing his vision and contemplating suicide, as well as his encounter with Martia, a guardian spirit from Mars. Martia influences Barty’s perceptions of destiny, friendship, and romantic relationships, guiding him toward literary achievement and personal growth.
Set within the late 19th century, the novel integrates elements of introspection, spiritual allegory, and personal memoir. Its themes explore the connection between earthly life and otherworldly guidance, framing the protagonist’s inner evolution against the backdrop of Victorian society. The work combines autobiographical detail with speculative spiritual elements, characteristic of the period's interest in mysticism and psychological insight.

When so great a man dies, it is generally found that a tangled growth of more or less contentious literature has already gathered round his name during his lifetime. He has been so written about, so talked about, so riddled with praise or blame, that, to those who have never seen him in the flesh, he has become almost a tradition, a myth—and one runs the risk of losing all clew to his real personality. This is especially the case with the subject…
