Description
Written around 375 BC, "The Republic of Plato" presents a Socratic dialogue that examines the nature of justice and the ideal state. The text features Socrates engaging with various Athenians and foreigners in discussions that question whether living justly results in greater happiness than living unjustly. The dialogue covers a range of philosophical topics, including definitions of justice, the structure of an optimal city-state, the concept of philosopher-kings, and issues related to the soul’s immortality and societal roles of poetry and love.
This work is considered a foundational text in both Western philosophy and political theory. It reflects the intellectual context of classical Athens and Plato’s aim to establish a political order rooted in justice and wisdom. The dialogue’s structure and content have influenced subsequent philosophical and political thought through the centuries.

Page numbers for the 1888 edition are given in-text printed in red. Stephanus numbers are given in the right margin. Sidenotes are given in the left margin. Things may be different on a small width screen: sidenotes and page numbers are removed, the Stephanus numbers are included in the body of the text in green. This means that most, but not all, internal cross-references should still work. The 1888 edition does not have a Table of Contents. The following listing provides hyperlinks to distinct sections of the work.
